Adrenal Glands

The adrenal glands are small almond-shaped organs that rest on top of the kidneys. These glands are responsible for many endocrine functions within the body. The adrenals deal primarily with stress. The four major stress hormones produced by the adrenals are; adrenaline, cortisol, DHEA, and norepinephrine. Cortisol is involved with the metabolism of carbohydrates and blood sugar, and under extreme stress large amounts of cortisol are released in the body, which can lead to major health problems.

Reduced adrenal function may be indicated by the following symptoms: weakness, dizziness, lethargy, headaches, memory problems, anxiety, depression, food cravings, allergies, and blood sugar disorders. Usually reduced adrenal function occurs after prolonged periods of stress or illness.

Evaluating the adrenal glands with saliva testing and correcting the deficiencies with adrenal tonic or glandular supplements can assist the body in regaining normal function. A healthy adrenal function is essential for a healthy thyroid function. Treating thyroid issues without addressing adrenal issues may take longer and be counterproductive.

It is also essential to develop a lifestyle that considers managing and dealing with stress. Continuous and prolonged stress from a troubled marriage, job-related problems, illness, or feelings of low self esteem or loneliness can be detrimental to the adrenal glands. It is important to discuss these issues with a trusted friend if possible or a professional, and to take positive steps to resolve the situation and reduce stress. Once an evaluation of the physical manifestations of adrenal fatigue are confirmed, remedial supplementation, changes in stress management , and self care strategies begin to heal the adrenals and restore the individual to health.
