Asthma

Asthma is a chronic disease in which the basic problem is a hyperactive airway. In response to various stimuli, the small breathing tubes in the lungs constrict when they shouldn’t and inflammatory changes occur in their walls. Although some people get asthma attacks when exposed to allergenic substances, the majority of sufferers react to nonspecific factors such as exercise, cold air, stress or head colds.

Wheezing, the tight whistling sound characteristic of an asthma attack occurs when the breathing passages narrow due to contraction of their muscular walls, swelling of the linings, and accumulation of thick mucus. Air is unable to flow normally into and out of the lungs. The chest feels tight; the person is short of breath, wheezes and struggles to catch a breath. An attack of asthma carries with it the danger of suffocation and death.

Conventional medical treatment of asthma includes avoidance of known allergens or other known triggers. Desensitization shots are given for specific identified allergens. Drugs to widen the constricted airways, reduce inflammation, or prevent asthma are usually given in treatment.

Keeping well hydrated is important in the treatment of asthma, especially when fluid is lost through rapid respirations. Drinking plenty of water also helps loosen the thick mucus that develops. Relaxation techniques are also essential in helping reduce the incidence of constriction and tension. NAET has helped many individuals reduce the incidence of asthma by reducing the reaction to allergens.
