Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release refers to the manipulation of the fascia in order to relieve pain and to restore function to specific areas inhibited by the tightening of the fascia. Fascia is a very densely woven connective tissue that is a specialized system covering and interpenetrating every muscle, bone, nerve, artery, and vein, as well as all of our internal organs including the brain, lungs, heart, and spinal cord. The fascia is actually one structure that exists from head to foot. Each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia; much like the yarn in a sweater connects the different stitches.
In the normal healthy state, fascia is pliable, relaxed and wavy in configuration. When trauma, scaring or inflammation occur, the fascia loses its pliability and becomes tight, restricted, and a source of tension for the rest of the body. The changes in the fascial system can interfere with comfort and function.
Myofascial release by a massage therapist can restore the body to normal comfort and function by releasing the restrictions and tightness of the fascia by using therapeutic massage techniques.
